Why Hampton Roads? Because it’s HOME.

Hampton Roads is more than just seven cities—it’s where Black Girls Tennis Club was born. It’s the home of our co-founders, Virginia Thornton and Kimberly Selden, and the very courts where Virginia first fell in love with the game. Growing up in Norfolk, Virginia played on these courts with her family, competed for Maury High School (Go Commodores!), and developed a lifelong bond with tennis that continues to shape her life today. It’s that deep connection to the game that inspired Virginia and Kimberly to create BGTC, an organization rooted in fostering radical joy and wellness within our community.

Our connection to Hampton Roads is something we’re proud to share with the world. We want to take the spirit of this place—its heart, its resilience, and its sense of family—and inspire others, wherever we go. But no matter how far BGTC grows, Hampton Roads will always be home. These courts are where our dreams began, and they’ll continue to be the place where we inspire the next generation. Through clinics, community partnerships, and events, we’re committed. to planting seeds of opportunity and carrying forward a legacy of resilience, connection, and joy.

So here’s to celebrating home, building legacy, and keeping the game alive for generations to come. Let’s PLAY!
