Why Virginia? Because it’s HOME.
Hampton Roads is more than just seven cities—it’s where Black Girls Tennis Club was born. It’s the home of our co-founders, Virginia Thornton and Kimberly Selden, and the very courts where Virginia first fell in love with the game. Growing up in Norfolk, Virginia played on these courts with her family, competed for Maury High School (Go Commodores!), and developed a lifelong bond with tennis that continues to shape her life today. It’s that deep connection to the game that inspired Virginia and Kimberly to create BGTC, an organization rooted in fostering radical joy and wellness within our community.
While Hampton Roads is home, BGTC’s mission extends across the Commonwealth. From Richmond to Roanoke, Fairfax to Franklin, and everywhere in between, we’re committed to sharing the spirit of the seven cities—its heart, resilience, and family connection—with communities statewide. Through clinics, community partnerships, and events, we’re planting seeds of opportunity and carrying forward a legacy of connection and joy.
But, no matter how far we grow, Hampton Roads will always be where it all began. These courts were the starting point of our dreams, and they’ll remain a cornerstone of our vision to inspire the next generation.
So here’s to celebrating home, building legacy, and keeping the game alive for generations to come. Let’s PLAY!
